Cedar Park City Council appointed Cedar Park Police’s Assistant Chief Mike Harmon as the interim police chief Feb. 27.
Harmon will began as chief Feb. 28 following the retirement of former Chief Sean Mannix.
Mannix announced his retirement to the department Jan. 24 after serving in the police department for 36 years, seven as chief, according to his letter. Mannix's retirement comes after the November exoneration of Greg Kelley, who was convicted of aggravated sexual assault against a child in 2014. Kelley and others called for the firing of Mannix following the Nov. 6 exoneration.
In a statement, Mannix wrote, “Make no mistake: I have heard the criticisms surrounding this case and taken actions to address them. I want to reassure our citizens that the department remains steadfast in our commitment to ensure community safety and public trust. It’s a responsibility and privilege I take very seriously.”
