Jonathan Taubert started as an employee and partner at J&J BBQ and Burgers before buying the business and becoming the owner in 2009.

The local smokehouse opened in 2001 and has served fresh barbecue and breakfast daily ever since.

Taubert has previous experience working for a carpet cleaning company, a model remediation company and then owning a flood-restoration business. He sold his business and began working as a cashier at J&J.

Originally from Del Valle, Taubert later bought a house in Cedar Park to start a family with his wife.

J&J uses two large pits to smoke its barbecue. In addition to barbecue, J&J has a full breakfast menu. Taubert said some of the restaurant’s popular breakfast items include the migas plate, the chicken-fried steak, and the brisket and cheese omelet.

J&J has a 7-pound migas challenge in which if a customer can finish the meal, they get their picture taken and put on the wall.

“The migas is my favorite ... but we do everything from menudo to barbacoa to pancakes from scratch [and] waffles,” Taubert said. “We do it all.”

Taubert said the restaurant smokes its brisket for 12-14 hours and that people can smell the barbecue as they drive by.

He said J&J uses a classic recipe for its fried catfish, which makes it unique.

“There’s nowhere else that really does it,” Taubert said. “It’s just old-school recipes, cornmeal, salt and pepper. Don’t mess with old-school food.”

Taubert encouraged the Cedar Park community to support small, local businesses such as J&J.

“Come give us a try; we’ve been part of the community since 2001; and we’re a local small mom and pop,” he said.
