The Texas Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, is asking for public feedback on plans to improvement Parmer Lane.

The details

Plans for the roadway include adding a third lane in both directions from SH 45/RM 620 to Whitestone Boulevard/RM 1431. Additionally, the schematic shows a three-lane frontage road in each direction to access cross streets and adjacent destinations as well as one continuous through-lane in each direction that bypasses signals at intersections by using overpasses or underpasses, and continuous shared-use paths.

Residents can access a virtual open house to review the corridor study at bit.ly/ParmerLane.

Those without internet access may call the Parmer Lane Corridor Study Team at 512-651-3964 weekdays between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. to ask questions and access project materials.

CAMPO will be accepting comments until Sept. 3. Written comments may be submitted by any of the following methods:
  • Mail: Parmer Lane Corridor Study, c/o Rifeline, 1608 W. Sixth St., Austin, TX 78703
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Online: A survey is available as part of the open house

The why?

Parmer Lane serves as a main thoroughfare for commuters in the northern reaches of the Austin metro and supports residential, commercial, and industrial uses, according to CAMPO documents.

Initial feedback from the community, dating back to 2018, outlined a need for bike and pedestrian access as one of the top priorities, as well as mobility and safety improvements at intersections, including optimizing signal timing, adding turn lanes and reducing speed limits.

Roughly 66% of all crashes along this stretch of roadway occurred at intersections, according to CAMPO.

Considerable growth in the area has also intensified the demand for expansion and improvements along this route.

Public input will be considered for the new corridor study, while recommendations from the 2018 study may be used as short-term improvements.

Looking ahead

After concluding the public comment period, CAMPO and TxDOT will develop a feasibility study report with recommendations for potential design concepts and improvements for Parmer Lane, which will be brought back to the public in the fall.

Future phases of project development will be a multiyear process and require additional funding in order to conduct environmental studies, begin design work, obtain right of way and start construction.
