Childhood hearing loss can lead to poor performance in school, self-esteem issues, communication issues and more, according to a March study from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
“For severe cases of hearing loss or microtia, we have one of the nation’s leading cochlear implant and external ear reconstruction programs,” said Kelley Murfin, public relations project lead for Texas Children’s.
The gist
A cochlear implant is an electronic device that sends sounds past damaged parts of the ear to the hearing nerve, called the cochlear nerve, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The device can enable those with hearing loss to hear when other methods fail.
The Austin ENT specialists provide a wide range of care outside of cochlear implants as well, including for chronic ear infections, sinus problems, airway disorders and more, Murfin said.
