Cedar Park residents may soon have access to a new recreational space for mixed programming.

The city of Cedar Park is planning to remodel its former public library into a new facility called Recreate, overseen by the Parks and Recreation Department, city documents state.

A closer look

The Recreate space will host programming for dance, theater, exercise and fitness, art, seniors, homeschool and education classes, and children’s play. Further programming options may be offered as city staff explore the space's potential, according to city documents.

The facility, currently in the design phase, will feature:
  • Three large classrooms and multipurpose rooms
  • Two medium mixed-use classrooms
  • A children’s indoor play area
  • Play equipment
  • A performing arts theater
  • Private party space
  • Office spaces
  • Staff and community conference rooms
  • Outdoor and indoor communal areas
The backstory

The city opened a new public library in the Bell District in November. The $40 million facility was approved by voters in a 2015 bond election.

The new 47,000-square-foot library is nearly double the size of the former library and has been two to five times busier, with around 2,500 to 5,000 daily visitors, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.

The city has used the former 25,500-square-foot library in a limited capacity to hold police training and meetings; however, it has not been open to the public, said Daniel Sousa, the city’s community affairs assistant director.

In May, Cedar Park City Council approved $300,000 for design services from Dahlin Group to remodel the former library off Discovery Boulevard. At a March 27 meeting, council approved $82,400 in additional design services for exterior and mechanical improvements, signage package design, an interactive projector, and IT, audiovisual and security services, according to city documents.

The Recreate facility is expected to open to community members between July and September 2026, Sousa said.
