The LISD board of trustees adopted the updated code of conduct during its July 31 board meeting.
Some context
The board is required to adopt the code of conduct each year. The document typically sees more changes during legislative years due to various bills passed during the session, said Bryan Miller, LISD’s senior executive director of Student Support Services.
LISD also received a model code of conduct from the Texas Association of School Boards in July based on interpretation of the recently passed laws, which were then translated into code of conduct language, Miller said.
What changed?A closer look
During the meeting the board approved several revisions to local policies with the exception of a personal communication device policy, which complies with HB 1481.
Trustee Tricia Bode said LISD's policy committee recommended the board bring the device policy back at a later date once the committee goes over further guidance from the Texas Education Agency.
Trustee Francesca Romans requested the committee look at how similarly-sized districts are implementing the policy. Other trustees voiced concerns with the bill, as students use cellphones for instructional activities in classes such as yearbook and band.
The bill currently does not allow exceptions for instruction-based cellphone usage, Miller said.
"Unfortunately, it's going to be somewhat of a lived experience to know where the pain points hit and where we need to provide additional support," Miller said.
What else?
The updated code of conduct will be posted on the district website here.
