Each of the three races for a Leander ISD board of trustees seat will be contested during the Nov. 5 election as seven candidates have filed applications for a place on the ballot.

Residents will be able to vote for their preferred candidate and elect a new trustee for Place 3 as incumbent Christine Mauer is not seeking re-election.

Current situation

On Nov. 5, the district will hold an election for places 3, 4 and 5 as the trustees in these positions reach the end of their current four-year terms. The filing period for the upcoming election closed at 5 p.m. Aug. 19, with seven applicants filing before the deadline.

Place 3 board member Christine Mauer and Place 4 board member Anna Smith have served on the board since 2020, while Place 5 board member Sade Fashokun was appointed to the board in 2021, after her predecessor Jim MacKay resigned, and was later elected to the seat in 2022.

The details

The following candidates have filed an application to run for the board of trustees:

Place 3
  • Nekosi Nelson
  • Jim Sneeringer
Place 4
  • Anna Smith
  • Brandi Burkman
  • Zach Zayner
Place 5
  • Sade Fashokun
  • Gerald Prater
In their own words

Mauer told Community Impact she is not seeking re-election because her youngest child graduated from New Hope High School in May.

“I feel like if you're going to be a trustee, that you should have a child in our system, and now I do not for the first time in 20 years,” Mauer said. “I felt like it was time to pass the torch to someone who had a child in the district [with a] vested interest.”
