Ham Bonz Soul Food will host its grand opening Oct. 15 at the former Bassano Italian Restaurant building in Bastrop's Tahitian Village.

How we got here

Husband-and-wife duo Marsha Jenkins-Sanders and John Sanders debuted their soul food staples Oct. 8-9 with a soft opening that Jenkins-Sanders said was a success.

Originally from Michigan, Jenkins-Sanders said they felt a spiritual pull to the area to start their family-owned, scratch-made restaurant using generational recipes with a personal twist.

What's on the menu?

The menu is divided into three categories: fixin's, dabs and dranks.

Fixin's offers traditional soul food entrees, including Mo-T's Fried Chicken, Cheryl's Country Wings, Braggin' Rights Baked Chicken and Country-Fried or Southern Smothered Poke Chops.

Dabs include side dishes, such as Marion's Candied Yams, Kim's Collard Greens, Big Momma's Macaroni & Cheese, TJ's Southern Green Beans and Conebred.

To wash it all down, Ham Bonz offers sodas, waters and teas, including sweet and "not sweet" tea, in addition to what they call their house wine—Kool-Aid.
