The city of Bastrop unveiled its highly anticipated Agnes Street extension during a brief ceremony Dec. 29.

The details

Bastrop City Council approved the Agnes Street extension project in December 2023 to reduce traffic congestion and increase access to the growing number of nearby apartments and businesses south of Hwy. 71, as previously reported by Community Impact.

The extension is also expected to reduce the response time of first responders by providing an alternate route, city officials said.

Zooming in

Bastrop City Council awarded an approximately $3.2 million construction contract for the Agnes Street extension project to Austin-based Joe Bland Construction in October 2024—a deal that was raised to about $3.5 million this October following a series of change orders.

However, the city originally budgeted roughly $5.3 million, Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said.

“This project was a little bit ahead of schedule and it’s under budget,” she said during the Dec. 29 ceremony.

The outlook

The Agnes Street extension is a component of the city’s Transportation Master Plan—which also includes the Blakey Lane extension project—that aims to alleviate traffic both north and south of Hwy. 71.

“The plan is to have connectivity all throughout the city,” Carrillo-Trevino said. “This is part one, and we’ll keep that [Transportation Master Plan] moving along.”
