Mike’s Bikes is open for business near downtown Bastrop and has just completed its first 30 days of operation.

Jason Hernandez, the owner, told Community Impact his business—which operates out of a renovated 1967 Airstream Land Yacht—is filling the need for a local bicycle repair shop in Bastrop, and offers bicycle rentals with safety equipment for $15 per hour and $50 per day.

“Being a full-service shop, I’m able to accommodate 99% of everybody’s needs,” he said. “People have been overwhelmingly positive, because I can do flat repairs and I can do full tune-ups. I literally had a guy waiting outside for me the day we opened.”

Hernandez, a Cedar Creek resident, named Mike’s Bikes after his son and said he is excited to be a part of the Bastrop community after about a year and a half of working with the city and on construction to open.

“It took a long time to get this bike shop open, so getting to this point is more than rewarding,” he said. “I’m not coming to work. I’m going to my workshop where I get to tinker with toys.”

Some context

Hernandez’s location is near the basketball court and the restrooms at Fisherman’s Park.

Bastrop City Council approved the lease agreement with Mike’s Bikes for the 400-square-foot location at 400 Farm St. in Bastrop during a July 2024 meeting, after Hernandez initially expressed interest in opening his business along Main Street.

“Unfortunately, with our building code rules and space required, we couldn't find a space that worked on Main Street,” Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said during a July 2024 meeting. “Alternatively, we looked at our parks and recreation system and determined that Fisherman’s Park was probably a more suitable place and an area of need if we are trying to encourage that type of mobility.”

The outlook

Hernandez, who works on three to five bicycles a day on average, hopes to eventually begin offering community classes every three months.

“That’s a goal of mine,” he said. “I want to have actual classes on how to change your own tire with the proper tools. I’ve set up classroom-type presentations before, so I’ve got a pretty good idea of how I want it to go. Not only do you get to see me do it, but I’ll walk you through, and it explains it all like a lab for a college course.”
