The details
Three contracts were given the green light, including:
- A $26,000 contract with the National Golf Foundation, paid for with series 2025 certificates of obligation, for a feasibility study on a par 3 golf course
- A $52,000 contract with Hotel and Leisure Advisors, paid for with hotel occupancy tax revenue, for a feasibility study on a hotel and convention center
- A $50,000 contract with Realty Trust Group, paid for through the Bastrop Economic Development Corporation, for a feasibility study on a medical mall with a full-service hospital and clinics
“Before we embark on the projects, we’re trying to determine if the data even finds that the projects are feasible,” Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said during the Dec. 9 meeting.
She referenced a previously proposed athletic facility in the Bastrop Business and Industrial Park.
“Everybody was super excited, but we had to review that data and found that there’s surrounding cities that were doing the same thing,” Carrillo-Trevino said. “So it wasn’t feasible for us to do something like that.”
Some background
The hotel and convention center, as well as the medical mall, would be located near the intersection of FM 20 and Hwy. 71 as part of Bastrop West—a 400-acre mixed-use development that would also feature an area for outdoor entertainment and fields for youth sports.
The city-owned project is in partnership with a private development company, according to city documents.
“This is super exciting as we continue to grow and the line between Travis County and Bastrop County is really blurred,” Carrillo-Trevino said of Bastrop West during her State of the City address in early September.
The outlook
The findings from the feasibility studies will be shared with Bastrop City Council at a future meeting.
