The facility will grow by approximately 4,000 square feet—a project estimated to cost $200,000, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The details
Lyndsey Schroder, public information officer for Bastrop County, told Community Impact the expansion will include:
- 28 indoor and outdoor kennel runs
- Five isolation kennels
- Space to add cage banks for small breed dogs, such as chihuahuas
What residents should know
Although the Bastrop County Animal Services shelter has 90 kennels, there were 138 dogs on site as of Sept. 17, according to officials.
“This number puts us at/over capacity, and we are attempting to get litters of puppies and dogs out to rescue [groups],” Schroeder said. “Some of the kennels contain nursing moms with litters or several littermates in one kennel.”
The outlook
The expansion—funded through donations from the public—is scheduled to begin Oct. 1 and be completed June 30, 2026, according to the filing.
“With the additional space, we are planning on having the capacity to help address the stray dog population and the large number of owner surrenders we are receiving,” Schroeder said. “Many are from the owner’s inability to spay and neuter their pets.”
