Motorists traveling through Bastrop can expect a new traffic pattern Sept. 3 when crossing the Colorado River via the Loop 150 Bridge.

What we know

The move is necessary to accommodate the construction for the rehabilitation of the adjacent Old Iron Bridge, according to officials.

“The Loop 150 Bridge will shift eastbound traffic into the center lane and close the lane closest to the Old Iron Bridge,” the city of Bastrop said in an announcement posted to social media. “The pedestrian walk will remain open.”

The adjustment, which does not include any changes to westbound traffic, is expected to last approximately six months, according to officials.

Some background

The city hosted a kickoff event for the Old Iron Bridge project July 26.

“This is a staple representation of Bastrop, so I’m really excited about the restoration of the Old Iron Bridge,” Mayor Ishmael Harris, who expects a great turnout, told Community Impact in the days leading up to the event. “I remember growing up as a kid and riding across that bridge, so it means a lot to me that our city is able to hold on to that heritage.”

The project—to be completed by Dripping Springs-based Jay-Reese Contractors at a cost of $10.1 million—will feature several improvements in addition to modern decorative lighting, including:
  • Adding a concrete deck
  • Adding steel truss components
  • Installing railing
The outlook

The Old Iron Bridge, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, is on track to reopen in the fall of 2026 after closing in 2018 in response to safety concerns.

“We’re going to get it done, and we’re going to get it done on time,” Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said during the kick-off event.
