The details
Although Bastrop County Central Appraisal District assessed 1808 Jasper St. at a value of $420,166, City Council approved the sale of the parcel, which is currently an undeveloped lot with trees, for $210,000 during a meeting Aug. 12.
“This property is no longer needed for municipal purposes,” Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said in a staff report. “The sale of this property aligns with the city’s strategic goals to efficiently manage city-owned real estate and redirect resources toward current priorities.”
ESD No. 3 must commence construction within 36 months, according to the contract.
Some context
Bastrop County voters approved the creation of ESD No. 3, which is expected to nearly triple the number of emergency medical services units in most areas, last November.
At the time, Preston McGrew—a Bastrop County First Responders volunteer who helped pitch the idea for ESD No. 3—noted that the process to begin implementation should take 12-18 months.
He and his peers, Caleb Peck and Paul Hightower, cited long response times across Bastrop County when making presentations at city council meetings across Bastrop County.
“We frequently see it go to level zero, which means there are no ambulances available anywhere in the county, and wait times between 45 minutes to an hour,” McGrew previously told Community Impact. "This just isn’t sustainable as a long-term solution, especially with the population growth we are seeing in Bastrop County."
What residents should know
ESD No. 3 officials listed several objectives for ESD No. 3, including:
- Stations located along major roadways with close proximity to high-demand areas
- Staffing five 24-hour units and two 12-hour units
- Assigning units based upon population density
Bastrop City Council will hold a second reading and vote to adopt an ordinance that will move the sale forward during its next regular meeting Aug. 26. The item will appear on the consent agenda.
