The Austin Film Society will accept grant applications for short films until 6 p.m. Sept. 4.

The details

Texans who are working on projects shorter than 40 minutes can apply online for up to $10,000 in assistance for preproduction, production or postproduction work.

“Texas is home to some of the world’s top filmmakers,” said Holly Herrick, the head of film and creative media at AFS, in a news release. “Our shorts grant ensures support for the next generation of artists and that geographic origin doesn’t exclude these emerging talents from the resources they need to realize their vision.”

This year, the MPS Camera and Lighting Award—which includes a multiday camera package rental from MPS Studios with a value up to $10,000—and the TBD Post Color and Conform Award—which includes a session with a professional colorist with a value up to $12,000—are among the additional in-kind prizes, according to AFS.

Zooming out

Of the 168 eligible applications in 2024, 19 projects were named recipients of the AFS Grant for Short Films, according to AFS.

“It was amazing to see the competitive and impressive work that’s coming out of Texas,” the panelists involved with the 2024 AFS Grant for Short Films said in a statement. “As enjoyable as it was to see the great work, it made the process that much more challenging. There are far more worthy projects than we could fund.”
