A collective of Bastrop residents will participate in an exercise that will help guide policy makers on future actions regarding emerging and unmapped flood hazards.

The workshop, hosted by the city of Bastrop and offered through the Texas Community Watershed Partners program under the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. June 25 at Bastrop City Hall, 1311 Chestnut St.

“It will be run/facilitated by the [Community Health And Resource Management] team,” city of Bastrop spokesman Colin Guerra said in a text message.

What to know

Local experts will be on site and will collaborate with participants to review local risk data, evaluate mitigation opportunities and strategies, and discuss potential next steps, according to the city of Bastrop.

Although participants will feature members from Bastrop City Council and Bastrop Planning and Zoning Commission as well as city staff, the city of Bastrop invited the public to attend, observe and provide feedback on the process.

The outlook

“After the workshop, we review your priority projects from the exercise and develop recommendations for implementation strategies, other community assistance opportunities, and funding sources such as state and federal grant and loan programs,” the city of Bastrop said in an event announcement.

Bastrop city staff will present those recommendations to Bastrop City Council during a meeting Aug. 12.

Officials emphasized how this workshop—which the city of Bastrop will tape a recording of—is just one step in what could be a lengthy process.
