With all Bastrop County votes reported, Republican candidate Butch Carmack won the race for Bastrop County commissioner, Precinct 1, against Democratic candidate Joseph B. Thompson.

Carmack told Community Impact that he intends to "keep Bastrop's small-town friendly values" while also addressing rising taxes as Bastrop continues to grow.

"I just want to thank everyone for their support and look forward to serving our great community," Carmack said.

For Bastrop County constable, Precinct 2, Republican candidate James L. Scoggins edged out incumbent August "Gus" Meduna Jr. with 60.84% of the votes.

Early voting results show Republican candidate Butch Carmack has taken an early lead ahead of Democratic candidate Joseph B. Thompson for the Bastrop County commissioner, Precinct 1, race. Carmack has 59.49% of the reported votes so far.

Incumbent Mel Hamner announced he will retire at the end of the year.

For Bastrop County constable, Precinct 2, early results also indicate Republican candidate James L. Scoggins is ahead of incumbent August "Gus" Meduna Jr. with 61.71% of the votes.

Bastrop County commissioners serve four-year terms. According to the Texas Association of Counties, their responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Conducting the general business of the county
  • Adopting the county’s budget and tax rate
  • Approving all budgeted purchases of the county
  • Authorizing contracts
  • Providing and maintaining county buildings and facilities
Bastrop County constables also serve four-year terms. TAC lists their responsibilities to include:
  • Serving as a licensed peace officer and performing various law enforcement functions, including issuing traffic citations
  • Serving warrants and civil papers, such as subpoenas and temporary restraining orders
  • Serving as bailiff for Justice Court

According to Bastrop County Elections officials, 65.05% of registered voters cast their ballots in the Nov. 5 elections.

Polls closed at 7 p.m., although those who were in line at 7 p.m. were still able to vote.
