What happened?
The district's board of trustees adopted the changes to the code of conduct Aug. 19.
The details
District administrators shared that the update to the school's student code of conduct includes:
- The prohibition of personal devices capable of two-way communication during school hours
- New language allowing teachers to formally remove students from the classroom after one incident of disruptive or abusive behavior
- Increasing the cap on the number of days students can spend in in-school suspension to 10 days, with potential extension upon review. Students can still only be given three days of out-of-school suspension per offense.
- Language permitting out-of-school suspension for students in prekindergarten through second grade, as well as those qualifying as homeless
- Language permitting expulsion after a single incident of engaging in conduct related to a false alarm, such as a bomb threat or terroristic threats involving a school, or committing a Title 5 offense off campus. Title 5 offenses include various forms of assault or harm to others, per the Texas Penal Code.
