The Bastrop ISD board of trustees named an interim superintendent to head BISD in July as officials search for the district's next leader.

What you need to know

Deputy Superintendent Kristi Lee was appointed to serve as the district's interim superintendent July 15. This comes a month after longtime Superintendent Barry Edwards announced his intention to retire from his position after 17 years.

Career history

Edwards, who has spent 37 years in education since beginning his career as a school teacher in El Paso, oversaw significant growth in the district's student population, as well as expanded access to technology and internet service.

His tenure also saw the opening of the BISD Family Resource Center and Health Clinic, and the expansion from half- to full-day pre-kindergarten.

What's next?

Board president Ashley Mutschink said Edwards' last day in his role will be July 31. Lee will serve in the interim as the district searches for its next superintendent.

Previously, the district shared in a news release that the board will partner with a search firm and gather community feedback to assist in choosing a candidate.
