Less than 6% of Allen voters participated in mayoral election this May

Allen saw low voter turnout at its local election May 2.

There were 4,070 total votes cast, which represents only 5.59% of registered voters in Allen, said Brian Griesbach, Collin County Elections’ records and audit coordinator.

At the time of the May election, there were 72,475 registered voters in Allen, Griesbach said.

Chris Schulmeister won the race for Allen mayor with 3,300 votes, or 81% of votes cast. Schulmeister ran against Dave Shafer, who got 770 votes, or approximately 19%.

The mayoral race was the city of Allen’s only contested race during the May 2 election. Council member Tommy Baril ran unopposed for reelection, as did Allen ISD trustees Polly Montgomery and Bill Parker.

The context

As of 2025, Allen’s population was 107,328, according to data from the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

Allen’s population has remained mostly steady, with 2.58% growth from 2020 to 2025, NCTCOG data shows.

Approximately 67.5% of Allen’s population is registered to vote, but less than 6% of registered voters cast a ballot in the May 2 election.
