The idea for Mindful Mermaid came to owner Vonda Kay while she was meditating and trying to discern her next steps after leaving the family law field in 2020.
“Three months later, we're signing a lease, I have a whole business plan, and I'm just really excited to take a leap of faith and open my own shop,” Kay said.
Mindful Mermaid opened in October 2020, offering crystals, candles, meditation supplies and more.
The big picture
Kay named her business Mindful Mermaid because of its focus on spiritual practices and her love of the beach.
“My husband and I go to the beach as much as possible,” she said. “We have a condo on South Padre Island, and he was born on Galveston Island.”
Mindful Mermaid started in a location on Bethany Drive, but Kay said the space was too small, so she moved the business to its current location on McDermott Drive in October 2025.
The shop sells a wide range of metaphysical goods, with the goal of supporting customers on their journeys.
“I was going so many different directions to get the things I needed for my meditation practices or for my spiritual journey, and I thought, ‘We need one in Allen,’” Kay said.
The items sold at Mindful Mermaid are sourced from local artisans, small online vendors and a several-week-long crystal event held annually in Tucson, Arizona.
“For miles, you will just see tents and tents of crystals, and some are as big as cars,” Kay said.
A closer look
In addition to selling meditation supplies, Mindful Mermaid offers classes and events, such as sound bath experiences, Turkish lamp making, beginners tarot workshops, jewelry making, Reiki healing experiences, new moon gatherings and more.
“There was an artist recently who did one of my sound baths, and he said he had four downloads of new art ideas while he was doing the sound bath, so that made me feel really good,” she said.
Classes at Mindful Mermaid have been a way for people in the community to build relationships, Kay said.
“They've been meeting for like three years now, and so they've all become best friends,” she said.
Quote of note
“People are looking for something positive, as there's a lot of negativity around a lot of things in the world right now, and so they're wanting to focus on something positive, to bring a positive feeling,” she said.
