Round Rock ISD trustees are expected to decide Thursday, Feb. 9, whether they will call for a special election to fill a vacancy on the RRISD school board or if they will appoint someone to take the open seat.

The decision is listed as the sole action item on the board's agenda for the meeting, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Round Rock High School's Old Lecture Hall, 300 Lake Creek Drive, Round Rock.

The vacancy opened after trustee Terri Romere, who held the board's Place 4 seat, announced in January she planned to resign. Romere will remain on the board until a replacement in sworn in.

Trustees opted to hold off on making a decision regarding the open seat after discussing the matter during a Jan. 26 workshop.

RRISD's seven trustees adopt district policies, employ and evaluate the superintendent, approve the budget and capital improvement plans and set the tax rate, according to the district. They are elected at-large by voters and serve staggered four-year terms.

According to state law, the RRISD board has 180 days to fill a vacant seat after a trustee's resignation is accepted. That would set a deadline of July 18 for the board to replace Romere, whose current term will end in 2018.
