Raised by a single mother along with her two younger sisters, Courtney Nguyen founded her own bakery, The Flour Petal Bakery, as a testament to her mother’s strength and the work ethic that she instilled in her from a young age.
Founded over six years ago as a home-based bakery in March 2025, Nguyen opened a brick-and-mortar for her business in Magnolia.
“I learned a lot from my mom and now my sisters and I compete to see who can make food as close to mom’s,” Nguyen said. “Food has always been big in my family gatherings and it's just how we connected with each other. We never grew up with a lot of money or anything like that. So being able to get together and cook together ... those are some of my favorite memories.”

How it started
A former healthcare worker, Nguyen said though she earned a dual degree in biology and chemistry with a minor in public health, she changed paths when she saw the community cultivated by her business.
Prior to opening a brick-and-mortar, Nguyen said she started teaching cake decorating classes to offer the community an outlet to get together and connect in different areas including Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio.
“One of the things that has always been close to my heart is building community,” Nguyen said.
What started as a hobby learned through YouTube videos has risen into a profession for the self-taught Nguyen.

What's special about it
Specializing in custom cakes, the Magnolia-based bakery, The Flour Petal Bakery, serves several areas including Magnolia, Cypress, Katy, Spring and The Woodlands.
In addition to custom cakes, The Flour Petal Bakery is a walk-in bakery offering an array of scratch-made baked goods made daily. Pastries offered include croissants, cupcakes, cheesecakes and cookies, as well as macarons and homemade pop-tarts.
The bakery also offers a few gluten-free options and serves iced coffee lattes, including Vietnamese coffee and lunch options such as wraps, turkey clubs and chicken salads.
To continue bringing the community together, The Flour Petal Bakery holds cake decorating classes and afternoon tea events.
