Shenandoah City Council to revisit permit for Staybridge Suites on Tamina Road

Shenandoah City Council voted unanimously to postpone the decision to grant a permit for a new Staybridge Suites and Atwell Suites at 9030 Tamina Road during its Sept. 23 meeting to allow for further deliberation and research.

If approved, the dual-brand extended-stay hotel will total 75,000 square feet and have 120 rooms. David Parker, a representative of the applicant, pointed to the pending closure of Days Inn by Wyndham in Shenandoah as evidence that there is room for another area hotel.

"It's normal for cities to replace outgoing properties like Days Inn that are better positioned as retail and for new hotels to come in," Parker said. "I don't think [the proposed hotel] will have a negative impact on the existing occupancy of the good hotels that you have, and there's plenty of displacement coming from The Woodlands and Spring."

The other side

Former Shenandoah City Council Member Ted Fletcher spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, noting that he owns the Sycamore Creek Ranch memory care facility next to the plot the proposed hotel would occupy.

Fletcher said Tamina Road is two lanes wide and he expressed concern that increased traffic due to the hotel and its construction could prevent ambulances from reaching his facility.

According to Visit Shenandoah, the city's convention and visitors bureau, the city of Shenandoah is home to 13 hotels. In 2025, council members approved a change in the city's hotel occupancy tax policy which they said provided for better tracking and tourism advertising efforts.

Shenandoah City Council will return to the decision during its next meeting on Oct. 7.
