Project Beacon autism resource center coming to Oak Ridge North

Oak Ridge North city officials approved a variance Jan. 13 to allow the opening of the Project Beacon Access Center, a resource center for adults with autism.

In a joint meeting between City Council and the city’s planning and zoning commission, officials agreed to grant a variance request to open a new center for Project Beacon, which will be moving its operations from the Kingwood area to Oak Ridge North.

“Beacon Access Life Skills Development Program aims to empower individuals with [the] knowledge, attitude and skills they need to function in their lives, achieve their goals, and contribute meaningfully to their communities,” said Cleo Tarver, chair of the city's planning and zoning commission.

Project Beacon Executive Director Kelly Baughman said the new facility will allow the organization to grow and accommodate more neurodivergent individuals.

The details

The new facility will be located at 27316 Spectrum Way in Oak Ridge North and will provide a space for adults with autism to explore social enrichment and skills training. Baughman said the goal is to begin vocational training programs in 2025 to further expand the nonprofit’s programs.

Baughman said the facility should be open by the end of April.
