UPDATE: Gary Gates wins Texas House District 28 seat in special runoff election — Eliz Markowitz and Gary Gates received the most votes in the race for state House District 28, advancing to the Jan. 28 runoff.

According to unofficial results updated at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 28, Republican Gary Gates has ousted Democrat Eliz Markowitz in the polls for the Texas House District 28 seat.

Gates received 11,782 votes, or 58.85%, while Markowitz earned 8,238 votes, or 41.15%.

The district, located in the northwest portion of Fort Bend County, was represented by John Zerwas, R-Richmond, until Sept. 30. He announced his resignation in July.

Zerwas’ resignation announcement triggered a Nov. 5 election, followed by the special election runoff Jan. 28.

Because the term for this seat would have expired in 2020, Gates will run again as the incumbent in the March 3 primary election and serve out the remainder of the 2018-20 term.

Markowitz, Gates and Schell Hammel will all be on the ballot in March. The Republican winner will face Markowitz in the 2020 general election in November in the race to win the 2020-22 term.
