Future improvements along Sugar Land’s Sweetwater Boulevard aim to enhance accessibility, improve multimodal connectivity and support safer travel.
In a nutshell
At an April 21 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a $425,053 design contract with Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc. for the first phase of the Sweetwater Boulevard reconstruction project.
The nearly $5.48 million project includes the reconstruction of select concrete pavement panels between Austin Parkway and Palm Royale Boulevard, according to agenda documents.
Additional project improvements include:
- Replacement of aging storm sewer inlets
- Widening the existing sidewalk to a 10-foot shared-use path on the north side
- Construction of a 5-foot sidewalk on the south side
The funding
Construction will be jointly funded by Fort Bend County’s $865.6 million mobility bond approved by voters in November 2023 and $350 million general obligation bond approved by Sugar Land voters in November 2024, per agenda documents. However, the county will cover all of the design cost.
Going forward
Phase 1 design is expected to begin this May and be complete in May 2027, per agenda documents.
Meanwhile, the project’s nearly $6.68 million second phase will reconstruct the Sweetwater Boulevard from Palm Royale Boulevard to Town Center Boulevard, according to the city’s website. Construction on both phases is estimated to commence October 2028 and be completed in April 2030.
