Sugar Land updates tree trimming and vegetation regulations

The updated ordinance adds tree trimming regulations around streetlights within 3 feet of the outermost portion of the light fixture, or if it impedes access to the streetlight for maintenance purposes, Guevara said. The amendment also adds that trees and vegetation must be trimmed when obstructing a license plate recognition camera or any other police department device.

Additionally, the ordinance updated its visibility triangle—a triangular sight area at all intersections that includes that portion of the public right of way and any corner lot within the adjacent curb lines—with regulations requiring vegetation to measure 35 feet from the point of an intersection, Guevara said.

Vegetation also may not occupy the space between three and eight feet above the street surface, sidewalk or parking lot.

Residents must also remove dangerous or sustainably dead trees that pose a threat to life or property, Guevara said. However, the ordinance adds an affirmative defense that if a certified arborist disputes the claim, it can be dismissed.

City staff will issue courtesy notices to notify residents of trimming violations through the rest of the year during education efforts, Guevara said. Enforcement will begin in January 2027.
