A child once walked up to Spring Antique Mall owner Karla Baker and asked whether the old Coca-Cola home phone on display still worked. Baker unplugged the store’s phone, plugged in the soda-themed device and called it with her cellphone. The child’s eyes grew wide as the phone rang, and he asked, “How did you know the number?”
Baker said these are the items that attract children to Spring Antique Mall. Meanwhile, objects such as records and typewriters serve as reminders of the past for adults.
“It’s kind of a silent history,” Baker said. “A lot of people come in and buy what they used to have in their house—because of the memories.”
Jackie Kerbow opened the shop in July 1992 with her late husband, R.B., after spending some time looking for antiques for a store on FM 1960. Baker purchased the business in 2002.
Kerbow still works at the register and is one of the 40 dealers who sells antiques in the shop.
