Sam Houston State University opens new charter school in Spring

Sam Houston State University officials announced the opening of a new charter school serving the Spring and Klein area in July.

What residents need to know

SHSU launched a series of charter schools in 2017, and has four locations across the northern Houston region including in The Woodlands, Humble and Spring. The newest location, which will be at the intersection of Kuykendahl Road and FM 2920, will offer schooling for children in kindergarten through second grade.

“By serving children, families and the broader educational community, we advance the university’s mission while preparing future educators and demonstrating what research-based instructional excellence can accomplish,” SHSU Charter School Superintendent Craig Toney said. “This expansion allows us to extend that service to another community while strengthening the connection between the university and public education."

How it works

SHSU's charter schools offer education for students in kindergarten through sixth grade year-round with no tuition costs; however, spots are based on a first-come, first-serve basis.

"This new location in Klein maintains the SHSU Charter School mission to be a transformational learning model through a choice education system that can be replicated by independent school districts across Texas so young students can experience academic, emotional and social success while they pursue their life ambitions," SHSU officials said in a news release.

Parents can submit an application for any of the SHSU charter schools online, but classes will not begin at the new Spring location until the fall.
