When pets are sick, anxious or in need of urgent care, owners often want more than a quick appointment and a standard treatment plan. They want a veterinarian who takes time to listen, explain options and tailor care to both the animal and the family behind it.

That philosophy is at the center of West Austin Pet Hospital, a new independently owned veterinary clinic opening in West Lake Hills this summer.

Led by owner Sean Quintana, DVM, the hospital combines advanced veterinary medicine with a compassionate, community-focused approach.

The hospital officially opens on June 29, and its open house is scheduled for June 27, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Building a community-focused hospital

Quintana’s passion for veterinary medicine began early. He spent time around animals of all kinds, from household pets to horses and cattle on his grandfather’s farm. That connection evolved into a fascination with science and animal physiology.

After earning a biochemistry degree from Oklahoma State University and graduating from the veterinary program at Texas A&M University in 2021, Quintana moved to Austin and began practicing veterinary medicine in the area.

When deciding where to open his own hospital, Westlake stood out for both its scenery and sense of community.

The clinic will be the first West Austin Pet Hospital location. Quintana said one of his biggest goals is to create a more personal alternative to corporate-owned veterinary practices.

“My goal is to build a community-driven hospital that has a very personal touch and custom care for individual pets and individual people,” Quintana said.

What services does West Austin Pet Hospital offer?

West Austin Pet Hospital’s services are designed to help pet owners receive both routine and advanced care in one place.

Services include:

  • Wellness exams
  • Vaccines
  • Blood work
  • Urgent care visits and emergency care
  • Spays and neuters
  • Dental procedures and extractions
  • Bladder surgeries, splenectomies and foreign body removals
  • In-house X-rays and ultrasounds
Through partnerships with specialists, pets will have access to advanced diagnostics and procedures, such as echocardiograms, endoscopies and orthopedic surgeries, without needing to travel to another facility.

Quintana said that providing access to high-level veterinary medicine was a major priority during the development of the hospital.

“Veterinary medicine has advanced quite a bit, and it’s still advancing year after year. There is care that can be provided for pets that is equivalent to the care humans would receive,” Quintana said.

How does West Austin Pet Hospital reduce stress for pets?

Alongside advanced medical services, the hospital is focused on creating a calm and supportive experience for both pets and owners.

The facility was intentionally designed with stress reduction in mind. Cats will have a separate exam room away from dogs, along with dedicated cat and dog wards for hospitalized animals. The dog ward is also soundproofed to help minimize anxiety for cats staying in the clinic.

The team will use fear-free handling strategies during appointments, including treats, pet-safe foods and calming techniques. For especially anxious pets, the clinic may recommend medications to make visits more comfortable.

The clinic will also prioritize patience and compassion over forcing pets through stressful situations.

“We’re a clinic that would never force a pet to do something that they’re not comfortable doing,” Quintana said.

That individualized philosophy extends to treatment plans. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, the team works to understand each pet owner’s goals, financial considerations and the pet’s overall condition before making recommendations.

Small team; personalized care

West Austin Pet Hospital will initially open with a team of four: Quintana, a practice manager; a licensed veterinary technician; and a hybrid veterinary assistant and receptionist.

As the hospital grows, Quintana hopes the clinic becomes known for compassionate care, accessibility and high medical standards delivered at fair prices.

The community can learn more about the hospital, receive updates and sign up for a free first exam through the clinic’s website at www.westaustinpethospital.com.

The upcoming open house is free and open to the public. It will feature tours of the facility, cocktails, pet portraits, a patch bar for boat totes, swag and more.
