North Texas isn’t just growing; it’s transforming into a national powerhouse. As new industries emerge, we’re seeing a massive workforce shift as people adapt to a rapidly changing economy.
To keep pace with rapid growth, the University of North Texas launched the Texas Talent Accelerator, uniting industry, education and nonprofits to build a stronger workforce and fuel continued economic growth in North Texas.
North Texas on the rise
North Texas is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. The Census Bureau projects the Dallas-Fort Worth area will soon become the nation’s third-largest metro, with more than 10 million residents. Along with a growing population, the region’s job market is expanding, with more than 20 Fortune 500 company headquarters in DFW, according to Fortune magazine.
Rapid growth also brings challenges. As industries expand and new businesses move in, the demand for skilled workers is evolving faster than traditional academic programs. Many students graduate without the skills that employers need, while companies struggle to find qualified talent. The result: a disconnect between education and the workforce that could slow regional growth if not addressed.
“One of the biggest barriers to economic development in any region is talent,” said Ben Magill, executive director of the Texas Talent Accelerator. “When the labor market isn’t aligned, it can slow growth and limit opportunity. It was created to tackle that challenge and ensure North Texas remains an economic hub.”

A smarter approach to workforce development
The Texas Talent Accelerator is a regional intelligence network that gathers data, insights and expertise from North Texas to create actionable insights. Its primary mission is labor market alignment through several key objectives:
- Connecting talent to opportunity for business growth and retention
- Stronger partnerships with regional employers
- Shared insights to track workforce needs and forecast trends
- Breaking down silos for coordinated collaboration at scale
- Aligning programs, credentials and internships with high-demand jobs
By bringing together partners, the accelerator ensures these goals aren’t pursued in isolation.
Results-driven collaboration
No single institution can address the region’s talent challenges alone, which is why the accelerator was built as a coalition across North Texas. By combining the expertise of industry, education, and community organizations, the initiative ensures coordinated, effective and regionwide solutions.
- Anchor employers: industry leaders providing insights on talent needs, skills gaps, and training.
- Educational institutions: colleges and universities aligning programs and credentials with workforce demand.
- Economic development partners: chambers, EDCs, and associations supporting businesses and regional growth.
- Partner organizations: nonprofits, foundations, and workforce boards expanding educational and economic opportunities.
“This coalition doesn’t just share information; it drives real change,” Magill said. “It’s about creating a workforce that meets today’s needs while preparing North Texas for tomorrow’s economy.”

What’s next for the Texas Talent Accelerator
Since launching in September, the Texas Talent Accelerator has connected education, industry and community partners to understand workforce needs, with quarterly reviews to assess trends, share insights and coordinate strategies.
This collaborative spirit drives Magill’s future vision.
“My goal is to create a regional model to show that different types of institutions can collaborate and coordinate more efficiently and move the needle on closing those skill gaps, filling talent shortages and creating an exemplary model of collaboration,” Magill said.
