For many McKinney families, the holiday season doesn't officially begin until the first parade float turns onto the streets of Historic Downtown. Children bundle up in blankets, parents find their favorite viewing spots and neighbors gather to welcome the start of the holidays together.
Organized each year by the Rotary Club of McKinney, the McKinney Rotary Parade of Lights is one of the city's longest-running and most anticipated holiday traditions.
Community members can help bring the event to life by signing up to volunteer. From assisting with parade check-in and staging to supporting hospitality and event operations, volunteers play an essential role in creating a memorable experience for thousands of spectators.

"The Parade of Lights has become one of those traditions our family looks forward to every year," a longtime McKinney resident said. "It's one of the few events where you see the whole community come together—neighbors, local businesses, schools and families—all celebrating the holiday season in one place."
The 2026 McKinney Rotary Parade of Lights theme is “Passport to the Holidays,” celebrating holiday traditions from around the world. The event will take place Dec. 12, and those interested in getting involved can register to volunteer by Dec. 1.
How does the Parade of Lights benefit the McKinney community?
Every parade registration, sponsorship and official merchandise purchase helps support the McKinney Rotary Foundation and its charitable giving in the local community. MCDC’s promotional parade support also helps shine a spotlight on McKinney’s local businesses.
The event has become much more than an evening of festive lights and decorated floats. It brings together local businesses, schools, nonprofits, churches, civic organizations and volunteers, while supporting Rotary’s service projects that make a difference throughout the community.

Funds raised through the parade help Rotary provide grants and assistance to organizations that are already doing meaningful work in McKinney. Past support has included local organizations such as Hugs Café, Direction 61:3, the McKinney Historic Neighborhood Association and Museum, the McKinney Public Library, Grace to Change, Community Food Pantry of McKinney and many others.
By supporting these organizations, Rotary helps them expand their services and create an even greater impact for the people they serve.

The parade is not simply one night of lights. It is one of the ways the Rotary Club of McKinney raises funds to reinvest directly into the community throughout the year.
How long do organizers plan the Parade of Lights?
Although the parade lasts only one evening, preparations begin months in advance.
Rotary volunteers spend countless hours coordinating registrations, recruiting sponsors, working with city departments, organizing volunteers and planning event logistics. Public safety, participant communication and parade operations are all carefully coordinated to create an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Each year, the organizing committee also looks for ways to improve the event while preserving the traditions that families have come to love.
What local partners are involved with the Parade of Lights?
An event that welcomes thousands of spectators doesn't happen without community support.
Rotary is proud to partner with the MCDC to help promote the Parade of Lights throughout McKinney and across North Texas.
Through marketing and public outreach, MCDC highlights Historic Downtown McKinney and encourages residents and visitors to support local businesses during the holiday season.
While Rotary volunteers lead the parade’s planning and coordination, MCDC's partnership plays an important role in connecting more people with the beloved tradition.

How can someone sign up to participate in the event?
One of the biggest improvements this year focuses on the participant experience.
The new registration process is designed to simplify check-in, improve communication and help participants arrive prepared so they can focus on enjoying the experience.
"We wanted to make participating easier from the very beginning," Parade Chair Anca Wetegrove said. "Every registered participant will receive a welcome packet with everything they need, including important event information, a staging map and a QR code that provides quick access to parade resources. We're also introducing a commemorative participant T-shirt that we hope people will proudly wear long after parade day."

At the Parade of Lights, there's a place for everyone to be involved.
Businesses, nonprofits, schools, churches, marching bands, civic organizations and neighborhood groups are all invited to participate. Volunteers help with everything from participant check-in and staging to hospitality and event operations, making the parade possible year after year.
Families can also take home a piece of the tradition with official Parade of Lights memorabilia, including commemorative ornaments, apparel and other seasonal keepsakes.
