Salem Lutheran Church marks 175 years of tradition with ‘Wonderful’ Christmas theme

Salem Lutheran Church marks 175 years of tradition with ‘Wonderful’ Christmas theme

Sponsored by: Salem Lutheran Church

For nearly 175 years, Salem Lutheran Church in Tomball has been a cornerstone of faith and tradition.

Founded in 1851, Salem Lutheran’s rich history has shaped its enduring legacy, with each Christmas season serving as a time to honor that tradition by bringing together the community.

A rich history

Salem Lutheran’s history stretches back to the founding of Tomball itself. In the mid-1800s, pioneering families gathered on just over 3 acres of land to form a congregation, later expanding to its current 128 acres.

The church quickly became a hub for education, starting its school in 1853, which is now the oldest continuously operating parochial school in Texas.

As Salem Lutheran Church celebrates nearly 175 years of service, they reflect on the significance of Christmas in their long tradition.

“Christmas is more than just a holiday for us. It’s a time to come together as a church family and remember the wonder of Jesus’ birth—the greatest gift,” Director of Communications Steve Perkins said. “Each year, we celebrate not just the historical event, but the hope, peace and joy that the season brings, and we’re reminded of how that gift continues to shape our lives and strengthen our community.”

Season of wonder

This year’s theme, "Wonderful," captures the awe and amazement of celebrating the birth of Jesus.

While many associate the holiday season with the familiar refrain of Andy Williams' song “It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” for the congregation, the word takes on a much deeper meaning—one that celebrates the wonder of God’s gift to humanity.

“We chose the word ‘Wonderful’ because it captures the awe and amazement that comes with celebrating the birth of Jesus. It’s not just a word; it’s a reflection of how we feel about the gift of Jesus, who brings us peace and joy,” Perkins said.

The "Wonderful" theme goes beyond simply celebrating the season—it invites everyone to pause and reflect on the depth of God’s love as shown through Jesus. This year, Salem Lutheran is creating opportunities for families and individuals to experience that wonder in a variety of ways.

Christmas events

Salem Lutheran’s Christmas events are a highlight of the season, bringing together both congregants and visitors.

Highlights include Ugly Sweater Sunday on Dec. 15 offers fun, family-friendly services at 9 and 10:30 a.m. with performances by the Salem Kids choir.

As Christmas nears, Salem Lutheran offers multiple worship services, including the Christmas Eve Eve service Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. for those traveling. On Dec. 24, there will be three services at 4, 6 and 7:30 p.m. Salem Lutheran Church welcomes all to these services, whether longtime members or first-time visitors.

A community for all

Salem Lutheran is dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels welcome all times of the year.

“We truly value every person who walks through our doors," Perkins said. “Whether you're a toddler, a senior, single, married or facing challenges, we want everyone to feel loved and welcomed. At Salem Lutheran, no one is ever alone—our doors are open to all, and we’re here to embrace and support each person, no matter where they are in life.”

With Tomball’s rapid growth, many people are new to the area, and Salem Lutheran’s doors are open to all who seek community and faith.

Looking forward 175 years

As Salem Lutheran approaches its 175th anniversary, it remains committed to its mission of growing and serving the community. The church’s long history and strong traditions provide a foundation for the future, one that embraces future generations and continues to share the love of Christ.

“We stand on the shoulders of the generations that came before us. Now it’s our turn to carry the torch forward, and we can’t wait to see where God leads us in the next 175 years,” Perkins said.
