Discover the perks of active adult living at Amberlin Georgetown

Sponsored by: Sparrow Partners

Living in an active adult community has shown to have a number of benefits for older residents who are looking to stay social and agile as they age.

Amberlin Georgetown is one of these communities that provides a flourishing social scene. Located at 5101 N. Mays St., Georgetown, the community has 55-plus apartments available. Community Impact sat down with sales specialist Emely van der Westhuizen to discuss what living in an active adult community consists of.

What is an active adult community?

van der Westhuizen:
Active adult living is a relatively new and innovative concept, often misunderstood by those approaching retirement. Traditionally, the transition into retirement has involved moving directly into nursing or medical facilities. However, active adult living offers a fresh alternative. It provides individuals who are not yet ready for nursing or memory care facilities the freedom and independence to reside in communities specifically designed for their demographic, without the constraints of multifamily living. Our communities are vibrant and engaging, with calendars filled with events aimed at fostering social interaction and community building. Research from various countries indicates that increased social interaction leads to longer and happier lives. Our goal is to create environments where residents can thrive socially and enjoy a high quality of life.

How would you describe Amberlin Georgetown?

van der Westhuizen:
Our community is specific to active seniors ages 55 and plus, and our oldest community member is 87 years old. It is truly heartening to witness this diverse age group coming together during our events and happy hours. Observing their collaboration and listening to their stories is a remarkable experience. We take pride in fostering a genuine sense of community.

What kind of social activities does the community offer?

van der Westhuizen:
Our activity offerings are diverse and engaging, designed to cater to a wide range of interests and preferences. Residents can participate in bingo nights, aqua fitness, chair yoga and brain games. Additionally, we host trivia sessions and arts and crafts workshops. Our community operates much like a cruise ship, providing a variety of activities that residents can enjoy at their own pace, choosing to engage as much or as little as they desire.

What amenities does the community offer?

van der Westhuizen:
Our community features a swimming pool with poolside lounges, a pickleball court, a fitness and wellness studio, craft room, movie theater, library and so much more providing an array of amenities for our community members. We often refer to these spaces as extensions of their homes, particularly for those who enjoy arts and crafts but may lack the necessary space. Our fully stocked craft room is always available to them. Additionally, our spacious game room is a popular spot, especially on Saturdays, when residents gather to play cards and socialize, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere.

What are some benefits of living in an active adult community?

van der Westhuizen:
Living in an active adult community offers numerous benefits, including a vibrant and independent lifestyle. Residents can lead active lives through various activities and social events while maintaining their independence. Unlike traditional retirement facilities, our community allows flexibility for those who prefer handling their own meal planning and grocery shopping. The community fosters a strong sense of belonging, providing numerous opportunities for social interaction and friendships, all within a comfortable and convenient living environment.
