Specialists in Dermatology is celebrating its 20th anniversary this September, marking two decades of service to the community. With the recent relocation of its Willowbrook location, the practice looks forward to reaching more patients and meeting their skincare needs.
When did Specialists in Dermatology open?
Specialists in Dermatology opened its first office in The Woodlands in 2006 and expanded with a second location in the Willowbrook area in 2008.
This past May, the practice relocated the Willowbrook office to St. Luke’s - The Vintage Hospital medical campus, placing it alongside other healthcare providers and increasing availability for new medical and cosmetic dermatology patients.
Over the years, the practice’s board-certified providers and physicians have also expanded their original focus on skin cancer treatment to provide medical, cosmetic and surgical dermatology services. Patients can receive care for conditions ranging from acne, eczema and psoriasis to skin cancer, while also accessing cosmetic services such as injectables and fillers.
Dr. Brent Shook, co-owner of the practice who specializes in skin cancer surgery and reconstruction, said the 20-year milestone is about the relationships the practice has built with patients and the trust it has earned throughout the community.
He said they treat patients the way they themselves would want to be treated.
“We view the patient as our partner in providing good care,” Shook said. “We want our patients to be involved in the decision-making process.”
How has dermatology changed in the last 20 years?
When Specialists in Dermatology opened, it was largely a skin care surgery clinic, Shook said, specializing in Mohs surgery—a highly effective treatment for skin cancer that removes cancerous skin tissue one layer at a time.
As the field of dermatology has changed over the years, Shook said the practice has also evolved.
Medical and surgical advancements, as well as new treatment options, have created new opportunities for patients living with chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
At the same time, patients are becoming more informed about skin health. Thanks to greater access to educational resources online and growing awareness around skincare, many people arrive at appointments with a stronger understanding of their conditions and treatment options.
One area where education remains especially important is skin cancer prevention and early detection. Shook encourages patients to take sun protection seriously and schedule regular skin checks, as damage caused by sun exposure may not become apparent until years later.
The rewards of catching skin cancer early are among the moments that stand out most during the clinic’s 20-year history.
“Anytime that we can catch something like a melanoma in an early stage—when we know that if it hadn't been caught in an early stage would end up being a life-threatening problem—those are the things that really make us excited to come to work,” Shook said.

“We’re excited to bring on new patients that we haven’t had the honor of taking care of yet,” Shook said.
