What should the community understand about insurance policies?
After over four decades working in the insurance industry, State Farm agent Rick Villarreal has learned that choosing the right coverage comes down to one core question: How much risk are you willing to take?
There are several factors to consider when purchasing an insurance policy:
Auto insurance: Beyond standard liability, Villarreal said to consider scenarios like a collision with an uninsured motorist. Ask yourself: “Could I afford to replace or repair my vehicle out-of-pocket if an uninsured driver causes an accident tomorrow?”
Renters insurance: A common misconception is that standard coverage protects everything under your roof. Basic liability-only renters policies generally protect against damages to the landlord’s property, but they do not cover your personal belongings in the event of a fire or other disaster.
Homeowners insurance: Lower monthly premiums often mask hidden out-of-pocket risks. For example, recent weather trends have led insurers to increase deductibles and apply depreciation schedules to roofs. Villarreal said that State Farm has not adopted this policy, but it is important to be aware of it when reviewing insurance proposals.
How is Villarreal involved in the Round Rock community?
As a fifth-generation Texan of Hispanic descent, Rick Villarreal's commitment to Round Rock extends far beyond his business. He has spent years supporting local organizations focused on business growth, workforce development and families in need.
He previously served for seven years on the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce board, including time chairing a workforce council. Through that work, he helped create opportunities for students to pursue careers in health sciences and skilled trades.
Villarreal also serves on the board of the Round Rock Area Serving Center, which provides food, clothing and financial assistance to residents in the Round Rock and southern Williamson County communities.
“It’s really gratifying to be part of that board,” Villarreal said.
Additionally, he is involved with the Rotary Club of Round Rock and supports the Texas Baptist Children’s Home, among other community efforts.
That community involvement gives Villarreal a unique perspective when it comes to serving his customers.
“I believe I'm the only agent that lives in Round Rock and also has an office in Round Rock,” Villarreal said. “Because I'm so involved in the community, I have a different perspective. [Community interaction] is so important to me.”

Why should potential customers work with Villarreal?
In addition to his extensive experience and understanding of the local community, Villarreal’s background as a retired CPA and former auditor influences the way he approaches customer conversations.
Rather than starting with a specific policy or price, he asks customers about their needs and circumstances, and evaluates risk from there, educating customers along the way.
“I use an educational process. I tell my customers, ‘I assure you, if we talk about your auto policy, you will learn more about it than you ever knew before,’” Villarreal said. “That's what we do differently here. I've had some customers for over 30 years, and I feel very fortunate and blessed for that.”

No matter what his customers’ needs are, his goal is to help them weigh those tradeoffs before making a decision. And by understanding each customer’s priorities, risks and budget, he can help them make coverage decisions that fit their lives while continuing the community-focused service that has defined his career.
