At Brodie Ranch Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Austin, recovery is about more than treatment; it’s about helping residents rebuild strength, confidence and independence.

That mission comes to life through recovery stories. One resident arrived in a wheelchair and, through steady work with their therapy team, progressed until he could leave using only a cane. Today, he returns for outpatient therapy to maintain his strength and stay connected to the staff who guided his journey.

“Our goal is to make sure that we maintain each resident’s highest level of functioning and independence,” Executive Director Ross Bradfield said.

That goal shapes the experience, starting from the moment a resident prepares to transition from the hospital to Brodie Ranch.

What does the intake process look like?

Residents experience a transition process that is designed to reduce stress.

The process is as follows:

  • Referral review and coordination: the team works with hospital partners to confirm needs, therapies and care requirements before arrival.
  • Whole-person assessment: staff evaluate medical needs, mobility and personal goals to understand the full picture.
  • Goal-focused care planning: a customized plan is created for each resident. Families are invited to participate in these discussions, ask questions and help establish shared goals.

What types of therapy are offered?

For some patients, short-term rehab is needed, focusing on intensive therapy to return home or transition to assisted living. For others, long-term care is the best fit, providing ongoing support while helping residents stay active, engaged and connected to the community.

Either way, residents at Brodie Ranch have access to a full range of therapy services to restore function and support everyday independence, including:

  • Physical therapy: improves strength, balance and safe movement.
  • Occupational therapy: supports daily living skills such as dressing, grooming and fine motor tasks.
  • Speech therapy: assists with speech and swallowing challenges.

Therapy is paired with activities that keep residents motivated, socially connected and emotionally supported. Group exercises, balloon volleyball, music sessions and outdoor walks provide moments of joy alongside therapeutic benefit.

One resident, initially withdrawn, now spends his afternoons in the dining room creating artwork.

"He's made a 180-degree [turn]. He's really thriving in this environment, and he can be creative. It's wonderful to see," Bradfield said.

Even small daily moments sustain motivation, such as a warm breakfast check-in, or encouragement during therapy.

“I’m really blessed to have great therapists here that genuinely push people in a positive way,” Bradfield said. “I’ll go back to the therapy department, and it sounds like they’re having a party, but it’s just a regular day.”
