In Central Texas, water is part of everyday life. From tubing the Comal, Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers to spending summer afternoons at Canyon Lake, Lake Dunlop and Lake McQueeny, families have countless opportunities to enjoy the water. That also makes early swimming education and water safety awareness especially important.

For New Braunfels and San Marcos-area families, Water Babies offers swim lessons in a welcoming environment where children of different ages, abilities and developmental needs can build that skill early—gaining confidence, strengthening family bonds and discovering a lifelong love of the water.

"The earlier children begin developing water safety skills, the more confidence they can build in and around the water,” Steve Blackmon, owner of Water Babies of Central Texas, said. “Our goal is to give families the skills and knowledge to enjoy the water while understanding the importance of ongoing supervision."

Why is early swim education important for New Braunfels children?

Early swim education helps babies and young children develop essential water safety skills, build confidence and become comfortable in the water.

Unlike programs that primarily introduce babies to water through play, Water Babies combines age-appropriate activities with foundational swimming skills development.

Through a positive, supportive environment rather than fear-based instruction, children gradually become familiar with the water while learning potentially lifesaving skills.

For Steve Blackmon and his wife, Kat, founders and swim teachers at Water Babies of Central Texas, bringing the franchise to the area was personal.

After struggling to find suitable swim instruction for their daughter, Steve Blackmon, who has more than 20 years of adult aquatics experience, recognized that other local parents faced similar challenges and brought the international franchise brand to New Braunfels.

“Every which way you turn, there's an opportunity for a water encounter,” he said. “It just makes sense to get these kids as safe and comfortable in the water as we can.”

What makes Water Babies swimming lessons different?

Water Babies uses a research-informed curriculum designed around children's developmental stages. The program offers several age-specific classes:

  • Pearl (baby swim lessons, ages 0-1): introduces babies to water safety, movement and confidence while encouraging parent-child bonding

  • Saffi (early toddler lessons, ages 1-2): builds swimming skills and independence through playful activities

  • Echo (toddler lessons, ages 2-3): focuses on strength, water safety awareness and growing independence

  • Sculli (early preschool, ages 3-4): develops swimming techniques, endurance and confidence in preparation for independent swimming

  • Swimvincibles (preschool and up, ages 4-14): helps older children learn swimming fundamentals, build water confidence and improve their technique in small classes

Classes for children younger than 4 include a parent or caregiver in the pool, creating a bonding experience while instructors guide swimming exercises.

Water Babies also prioritizes instructor preparation; teachers complete more than 120 hours of combined training, including lifeguarding, SafeSport and Water Babies-specific instruction, as well as continuing education once they are certified.

Indoor pools are maintained at approximately 90-95 degrees to help keep young swimmers comfortable. During lessons, families can see children's confidence, coordination and comfort improve.

"Bonding really is the thing that we'd really like to see in our Water Babies Lessons," Steve Blackmon said. "Bonding and then of course safety."

How do early swimming lessons support cognitive development?

Early swimming lessons can help children build skills that extend beyond the pool.

According to Steve Blackmon, swimming engages both sides of the brain as children learn to coordinate their movements, respond to instructions and navigate the water. He said the program's structured activities can help strengthen early comprehension, coordination and confidence.

Water Babies instructors have witnessed this firsthand with infants who begin recognizing familiar verbal cues after just a few lessons and anticipating what exercises come next.

"There's a lot of child development that has been researched in order to maximize the results for the swimmer," Steve Blackmon said.

How does Water Babies support children’s developmental needs and learning styles?

For Water Babies, creating a welcoming environment means recognizing that every child learns differently.

Recognizing that children with different developmental needs may face unique challenges around water, Steve Blackmon has made inclusive instruction an important part of Water Babies of Central Texas. The program welcomes children with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental differences, with instructors working alongside families to adapt lessons to individual abilities and learning styles.

Water Babies has instructors who are experienced working with children with disabilities. Steve Blackmon said he has also enlisted the help of a sign language interpreter to work with children who are deaf. These accommodations reflect his philosophy that swimming should be accessible to every child.

"All comers are welcome at Water Babies regardless of your skills, socioeconomic background," he said. "We will find a way to help you learn how to swim."

With indoor swimming locations throughout the New Braunfels and San Marcos area, Water Babies offers families the opportunity to build swimming skills year-round. Starting lessons during the cooler months allows children to develop confidence and practice essential water safety skills before summer activities begin.

"Winter lessons build summer confidence," Steve Blackmon said.
