A 29-year career in insurance was not part of the original plan for State Farm agent Monica Story, but it quickly became a lifelong calling.

Monica began her journey in the industry as a teenager, making insurance payments for her family at a local office. What started as a simple errand turned into an opportunity when she was offered a job answering phones. Not long after, a devastating tornado struck her community, shaping her perspective on what insurance and service could truly mean.

Seeing firsthand how her team supported families during a crisis solidified her decision to stay.

Over the years, she earned multiple licenses, grew within the industry and opened her own agency in Hutto five years ago.

Today, Monica leads her office with a focus that goes far beyond policies and paperwork.

A relationship-first philosophy

At the core of Monica’s approach is a deep commitment to building genuine relationships with her clients. She and her team prioritize trust, transparency and ongoing communication, often working with clients for decades and across generations.

Her guiding principle reflects that continuity: “where your customers become friends, and your friends become customers.”

Monica positions herself as both an advisor and educator by taking the time to understand each client’s unique situation. Rather than making decisions for clients, she walks them through options, helping them understand the potential outcomes so they can make informed choices.

Education over transactions

For Monica, one of the most important aspects of her work is education.

She said that insurance decisions often come down to more than just price. While affordability matters, understanding the purpose behind a policy and how it functions in real-life scenarios is critical.

For example, Monica often walks clients through what could happen if they remove certain coverages to save money. Someone who pays off their car may consider dropping comprehensive and collision coverage, but, in the event of an accident, that decision could mean paying thousands of dollars out of pocket.

By breaking down the math and potential risks, Monica helps clients weigh whether short-term savings are worth long-term consequences.

This educational approach also extends to customization. Monica emphasizes that insurance is not one-size-fits-all. For instance, a household with multiple vehicles may not need rental car coverage, while someone who relies on a single vehicle for daily transportation might.

By tailoring policies line by line, she ensures clients have the protection they need without paying for what they don’t.

Simplifying complex coverage

With more than 100 insurance and financial products available, including home, auto, life and investment services, Monica’s agency offers a comprehensive range of options.

One key strategy she recommends is bundling policies, which can provide both financial savings and a more streamlined experience. By consolidating coverage under one provider, clients can avoid gaps or overlaps while gaining a clearer, more holistic view of their protection.

Customization also plays a major role in simplifying the process. By walking through each option in detail, Monica ensures clients understand exactly what their policy does and doesn’t cover.

Supporting clients through every stage of life

Monica’s work spans every phase of life, from milestone moments like buying a home or welcoming a child, to more difficult situations such as accidents or loss.

She encourages clients to review their coverage every one to two years, especially during major life events like marriage, starting a business or approaching retirement. These moments can significantly impact insurance needs, making it essential to reassess and adjust policies accordingly.

For Monica, the most meaningful part of her work is showing up during life’s hardest moments, and life’s happiest moments.

“Honestly, the most rewarding part is being there during someone’s toughest time and knowing that you did the right things to protect them, and you’re going to be there to support them. ... I’ve been there at 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning after claims called me saying someone’s house burned down,” Monica said. “The other rewarding times are when people's plans come together. Maybe their kids are going off to college, or they've achieved a goal we've been talking about for years.”

That consistency builds lasting relationships and reinforces trust over time.

A people-first team culture

Behind Monica’s success is a close-knit, tenured team of six that shares her values.

As a small, family-owned business, her agency emphasizes hiring individuals who genuinely care about helping others. While technical skills can be taught, she believes compassion and integrity must come naturally.

That mindset is rooted in Monica’s own life. She is a Texas native with a strong family support system. She credits her family, including her husband of 27 years and their two children, who have both worked in the business, with shaping the way she connects with clients, creating an environment where conversations feel less like transactions and more like sitting down with a trusted friend.
