In Splendora ISD, learning isn’t just about textbooks and tests; it’s about experiences that spark curiosity, creativity and connection.

The Splendora ISD Education Foundation, a nonprofit, bridges the gap between classroom needs and limited school budgets.

“Our top goal is to bring innovative and exciting opportunities to our students,” foundation coordinator Katie Key said. “Our goal is to support our teachers with resources and opportunities for students, and to help lessen how often they have to reach into their own pockets.”

A small town facing growth

Splendora, a small town located 30 minutes north of Houston’s Intercontinental Airport, is undergoing big changes. The district serves about 5,900 students, and with rapid population growth, enrollment is expected to triple in the next decade.

Splendora ISD serves a diverse community, with many students from economically disadvantaged households. Many families face financial challenges that make it difficult to provide extra learning materials, technology or enrichment opportunities outside the classroom.

“Eighty percent of a district’s budget goes toward personnel costs,” Key said. “That leaves a tiny portion for curriculum, supplies and enrichment programs. We try to bridge the gap so all students can access meaningful educational experiences.”

Grants that spark imagination

One of the foundation’s most exciting initiatives is its grants program, designed to bring fresh ideas and hands-on experiences into the classroom. Last November, the foundation awarded a record $50,000 in grants, a significant increase from the $33,000 given out the previous year.

The fourth-grade science team at Peach Creek Elementary will use its grant to build a school garden, where students can track plant life cycles, measure weather, and see science in action—transforming abstract concepts into hands-on discovery.

Meanwhile, the foundation funded PAWS for a Cause at Splendora High School, a program that allows student-athletes to spend time with peers in special education classrooms. This partnership lets these students collaborate on projects, practice social skills, and develop empathy, teamwork, and friendship.

Scholarships that open doors

The Splendora ISD Education Foundation invests directly in students through five annual scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,000. Several awards are funded through endowments honoring longtime Splendora teachers and a student whose legacy inspires the community.

The scholarships support graduating seniors and district staff pursuing higher education in fine arts, education and academic achievement.

Community support fuels the mission

Much of the foundation’s work relies on community fundraising and volunteer involvement.

Signature events include Purse Bingo, where winners receive designer handbags; an annual summer golf tournament; and Men Who Cook, a friendly culinary competition with a live auction.

Splendora ISD Superintendent Dr Dustin Bromley and his co-chef Dr Glenn Barnes, Cleveland ISD Superintendent, were big winners at this past year's Men Who Cook fundraiser, bringing home the Best Entree prize. Volunteers, committee members and board leaders play a critical role in planning events, securing sponsorships and guiding the foundation’s long-term vision.

As Splendora grows, the foundation remains focused on ensuring every student—regardless of background—has access to meaningful learning experiences that inspire confidence, creativity and opportunity beyond the classroom.
