As Denton County grows and housing costs rise, finding an affordable home has become increasingly difficult for seniors, working families, veterans and individuals facing homelessness.

For more than 30 years, Denton Affordable Housing Corp., or DAHC, has worked to address that challenge, providing affordable housing and connecting residents with resources that support long-term stability and independence.

Now, the organization is expanding its impact by developing McAdams Haven, a new 84-unit permanent supportive housing community for individuals exiting homelessness in Denton County.

How does DAHC serve the community?

DAHC works to expand affordable housing opportunities throughout Denton County for residents who face barriers to securing stable housing.

The organization currently owns and manages more than 90 affordable housing units and is developing an additional 186 housing options to meet growing demand.

Executive Director Carrie Baugus said the need for affordable housing has grown significantly over DAHC’s three decades of service, extending beyond traditionally vulnerable populations to include teachers, healthcare workers and working families.

Affordable housing helps seniors age with dignity, working families stay in their homes and individuals find a pathway out of homelessness. As housing costs increase, DAHC remains focused on helping residents stay in the community they call home.

"At DAHC, we're in the people business just as much as we're in the housing business," Baugus said. “We know that when people have a safe, affordable place to live, they're better able to care for their families, maintain their health, keep a job and be active members of the community.”

What will McAdams Haven offer the community?

McAdams Haven, DAHC’s new housing community for individuals exiting homelessness, will feature 84 fully furnished apartments with utilities included and access to supportive amenities, offering residents a stable place to live, establish routines and plan for their future.

"McAdams Haven is about more than providing housing; it's about giving people a fresh start," Baugus said.

Named in honor of Linnie McAdams, the founder of DAHC and the first woman of color to serve on Denton City Council, the development reflects an important lesson DAHC has learned through its existing properties: Housing is not one-size-fits-all.

While some individuals need access to affordable housing, others benefit from additional resources to successfully transition out of homelessness and maintain stability.

“McAdams Haven builds on that experience by filling a critical gap in Denton County's housing system,” Baugus said. “It's another level of support that has been missing in our community, providing housing and services designed specifically for people who need them most.”

What supportive services will McAdams Haven provide?

McAdams Haven will bring essential services and resources together in one location, helping eliminate barriers that can make everyday life challenging.

Planned amenities and services include:

  • Cyber lab: internet access, workforce training and benefit enrollment

  • Food pantry: convenient access to food resources

  • On-site case management: personalized assistance to help residents navigate challenges and work toward individual goals

  • Telehealth room: opportunities for residents to access healthcare services remotely

  • Transportation assistance: support with getting to medical appointments

These resources aim to help residents address challenges that could otherwise interfere with their ability to remain housed.

"If a resident is struggling with their health, doesn't have access to food, can't get to appointments or doesn't have internet access to apply for benefits or jobs, simply handing them the keys to an apartment isn't enough," Baugus said.

How does DAHC help residents build long-term stability?

Baugus said transitioning out of chronic homelessness takes time, particularly for those who have experienced years of uncertainty and trauma. By taking a holistic approach to housing, DAHC helps residents finally live out futures they choose for themselves.

“We want to create a place where people can heal, build connections and regain a sense of belonging,” she said. “When residents feel safe, supported and empowered to pursue their own goals, that's what success looks like to us.”

How can community members get involved?

Community members can donate to the McAdams Haven fundraising campaign to help unlock $17 million in federal funding for the development’s homes, furnishings, shared spaces and essential services.

Donations can help Denton County residents achieve the stability they deserve.

“At the end of the day, we all have a role in caring for our neighbors,” Baugus said. “Our role is to create housing and communities where people feel supported, valued, and connected. When people have the opportunity to build stable lives, all of Denton County benefits.”

Through developments like McAdams Haven, DAHC is continuing its mission to make safe, affordable housing—and the opportunities that come with it—accessible in Denton County by investing in the people who call it home.
