McKinney-founded StatLab Medical Products has been acquired by Leica Biosystems, an operating company of Danaher Corporation (NYSE: DHR). Danaher is an S&P 500 and Forbes Global 2000 company with about 60,000 associates worldwide. The deal closed Sept. 28. Terms were not disclosed.

StatLab was founded in McKinney in 1976 and has called the city home for 50 years. It makes the consumables, reagents and equipment that pathology labs use to prepare tissue samples, from specimen collection through slide staining. Those products help labs deliver faster, more accurate cancer diagnoses. Today StatLab serves thousands of laboratories across the U.S. and Europe.

Under its latest owners, Linden Capital Partners and Audax Private Equity, StatLab grew from a mostly U.S. business into a global manufacturer. It expanded in-house production, built a manufacturing footprint on two continents and completed nine acquisitions of its own.

"Joining Danaher, through Leica Biosystems, is a testament to that work and our mission remains unchanged," CEO of StatLab Sung-Dae Hong said.

Leica Biosystems is a global leader in anatomic and digital pathology. The deal gives it a complete lab offering, from sample preparation to imaging and reporting.

"Every step we take to accelerate critical cancer diagnostics helps patients get on the path to treatment faster," said Gustavo Perez-Fernandez, Group Executive of Danaher's Diagnostics business and President of Leica Biosystems.

"StatLab started here 50 years ago and grew into a company one of the world's top life sciences firms wanted to own," said Michael Kowski, President and CEO of the McKinney Economic Development Corporation. "That is the McKinney story. Companies start here, scale here and get noticed on a global stage. We are proud of the StatLab team and the work they do for cancer patients everywhere."

A pattern of McKinney-grown success

StatLab is the latest McKinney company to draw a major buyer. Recent deals show the trend, and each company kept a strong presence in the city after the sale:

  • Encore Wire: Started in a 68,000-square-foot McKinney warehouse more than 30 years ago. It grew into one of the city's largest employers and a leading U.S. maker of copper and aluminum building wire for homes, businesses and industry, all produced on a single, vertically integrated McKinney campus. In 2024, global cable leader Prysmian acquired Encore in a deal valued at more than $4 billion and committed to keeping a significant presence on that campus. Since the sale, Encore has continued to grow its 460-acre McKinney footprint and has planned a major expansion near McKinney National Airport.

  • Independent Financial: Brought its parent company, Independent Bank Group, to a new McKinney headquarters in 2019. SouthState Bank completed its merger with Independent on Jan. 1, 2025, creating a combined company with about $65 billion in assets and expanding SouthState's reach across Texas. Independent operates three McKinney branches and employs more than 1,500 people in the city, underscoring McKinney's role as a base for Texas operations.

  • SRS Distribution: Was founded in 2008 and opened its corporate headquarters in McKinney in 2021. It became one of the nation's fastest-growing building products distributors, serving professional roofers, landscapers and pool contractors through more than 760 locations in 47 states. The Home Depot completed its acquisition of SRS in June 2024 at a total enterprise value of about $18.25 billion. SRS has continued to expand its footprint since the sale and plans to keep its McKinney headquarters.

"When global companies buy McKinney businesses, they are buying what McKinney helped build," Kowski said. "Our job is to give companies the foundation to start, scale and stay."
