When a Colleyville homeowner wanted to transform her rear driveway into a multi-purpose space where her kids could play basketball and ride bikes, while still leaving enough room to park her truck, she turned to Sam the Concrete Man.
Franchise owner Brett Flory and his crew removed the existing surface and poured a smooth concrete finish designed for both recreation and everyday use.
The new space was built to be comfortable enough for kids to run barefoot while still providing traction when wet. It was also engineered to prevent water from pooling after rain.
Projects like this reflect the core of Sam the Concrete Man’s work: turning customers’ ideas into high-quality concrete solutions, backed by strong customer service.

The history of Sam the Concrete Man
Since its founding in 1989, Sam the Concrete Man has grown into a national franchise with 131 locations, including eight serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Flory owns two of those locations: DFW Mid-Cities and Arlington.
His path into the concrete industry followed decades of interest that began long before he made the career shift.
“I worked at IBM for many years, but I’d been interested in construction since college,” Flory said. “So, when I left IBM in 2017, I opened a construction company, and I mostly focused on flipping houses on weekends and after hours. I always enjoyed the concrete side of that business, so in 2025, I had the opportunity to join Sam the Concrete Man and go from construction to full-time concrete work.”
What services does Sam the Concrete Man provide?
Sam the Concrete Man provides a range of services for both residential and commercial properties, including:
- Driveways
- Patios
- Walkways
- Slabs for spas and sheds
- Foundations
In addition to traditional concrete surfaces, customers can choose from options designed to enhance curb appeal. These include exposed aggregate finishes and decorative concrete that can mimic the appearance of wood, brick or stone in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes.
To help customers visualize the finished product, the team can provide samples and mockups before construction begins, ensuring they feel confident in their selections.

How does the process work?
Every project begins with a conversation. When a customer contacts Sam the Concrete Man, a project coordinator gathers information about the project before scheduling an on-site estimate.
The team visits each property to evaluate site conditions, access points, drainage requirements and the customer's goals. After meeting with them, they develop a customized solution and provide an estimate before leaving the property.
By taking the time to thoroughly assess each project upfront, the team aims to eliminate unexpected costs later in the process.
A focus on quality from start to finish
Flory oversees four crews, each trained in consistent standards for customer service and craftsmanship. A key part of his approach is what he calls “the power hour,” which is the final hour of the workday when attention to detail can often slip.
“During the last hour of work, humans, in general, start thinking, ‘I need to get home, feed my dog and play with my kids.’ All of those things start creeping into people’s minds, and that’s usually when mistakes are made,” Flory said.
To reinforce that mindset, Flory has his team sign a document outlining common scenarios where mistakes occur. This helps keep quality consistent through the end of each job.
That attention to detail extends beyond the concrete itself. Crews are trained to thoroughly clean job sites and backfill areas around newly poured concrete rather than leaving gaps along the edges; a step Flory said is often overlooked in the industry.
This has led the business to earn a BBB accreditation with an A rating, and a five-star average rating on Google reviews.

Looking ahead
As Sam the Concrete Man continues to expand, Flory said collaboration among all DFW franchise owners helps create a consistent experience for customers across the region.
By sharing best practices, discussing project challenges and learning from one another, the franchise owners work together to strengthen the brand.
For Flory, the most rewarding part of the business remains the people.
“The best part of the job is meeting with people, understanding their needs and bringing value to their lives,” Flory said.
