In the heart of McKinney, where the spirit of community and competition thrives, Areté Athletics has been a beacon for young athletes since opening its doors in 2015.
Areté—meaning "excellence"—was founded with a mission to enhance youth sports in the broader North Texas area through top-notch programming and facilities. It has grown into a multifaceted hub, offering volleyball, basketball, performance training, recovery services and more.
Over the past decade, it has fostered an environment where kids build skills, confidence and lasting memories, all while addressing a critical shortage of resources for aspiring athletes.
Yet, amid this success, a persistent challenge has loomed: the affordability gap that keeps many families sidelined.
Youth sports, with their profound potential for skill-building, character development and social connection, often come with costs that place them out of reach. Recognizing this, Areté's owners and leaders have long provided quiet assistance to a handful of families each year. The transformative impact—watching children flourish on and off the court—sparked a vision for something bigger, more sustainable and community-driven.
Enter the Areté Foundation, officially launched this year as the next evolution in Areté's legacy of service.
"From the beginning, our mission has been to enhance youth sports in McKinney and the broader North Texas area by providing top-notch programming and facilities," Areté chairman Lance Black wrote in a recent press release. "We've seen what happens when we assist a family and get a child into a program. We want to enable all athletes access to the transformative value of youth sports."

The Foundation establishes a formal structure, complete with a dedicated board and review process, to evaluate financial needs and distribute scholarships, primarily focused on expanding access to Areté's youth volleyball programs.
But its reach extends far beyond individual aid; it serves as the primary vehicle for amplifying community impact, building on Areté's history of giving back.
Over the years, athletes and staff have rolled up their sleeves for food pantry efforts, clothing donations and partnerships with local nonprofits such as the Love Life Foundation. Recent highlights include donating gift cards to under-resourced middle school students and providing thousands of pairs of socks to families in need.
“We’re proud of the impact we’ve made, but we also know that not every family has the means to participate,” the Areté team wrote. “While there are wonderful charitable groups supporting needs worldwide, there are families in our own backyard with real needs.”
The Foundation embodies this ethos of "development beyond the court," continuing service projects while eliminating financial barriers to ensure every young athlete can strive for their highest potential.
To celebrate the launch, Areté has unveiled Foundation Hall—a reimagined hallway that bridges two pivotal gyms: the original, where the journey began, and the new one heralding a brighter future.

This permanent display features a beautiful illustration of the Foundation, its mission statement and a plaque honoring founding members. It's an invitation for families, team members and supporters to join the mission by contributing as founding sponsors.
"Your support will directly help us make a difference, and your name will be proudly displayed as a lasting testament to your commitment," the team wrote.
As community backing grows, Areté isn't just cultivating better volleyball players; it's weaving a stronger fabric for North Texas. By bridging the affordability gap and fostering service, the Foundation ensures that the true spirit of Areté—excellence for all—reaches every corner of the community.
