Sunset Valley OKs event center on Brodie Lane

Sunset Valley's Village Homestead and Barn at 5207 Brodie Lane is one step closer to becoming an events center.

At its July 24 meeting, the Sunset Valley City Council unanimously approved Bury + Partners Engineering Solutions' final site plan and watershed development permit for the Brodie Events Center project on the condition that a few issues are addressed before development begins.

The council is requiring that mitigation fees are paid to plant new trees, replacing existing foliage that might be harmed during construction of the center's parking lot. Additionally, the project manager must remove a wall from the parking lot, comply with water and wastewater drainage codes, provide utility information to the city, and obtain approval of the site plan from the fire department before developing the property.

If project owner Dan Ross, an attorney who operates The Allan House wedding and events center, addresses the city's contingencies, he would be able to move forward with the plans for the homestead and barn, the council said.

At the meeting, Doc's Backyard owner Ted Karam spoke on behalf of Ross, whom he said he has known for 18 years.

"My two partners and I feel you should give approval to the barn. We looked at the parking plan, and it seems to make sense to us," he said. "From our standpoint, we would rather see that use than just about anything else."

Representatives from Tarka Indian Kitchen, Dickey's Barbecue Pit and Holiday Inn Express also wrote letters in support of the initiative. However, Rick Albers, representing owners of neighboring BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, Verizon and the Cole MT Sunset Valley TX Inc. shopping center, wrote a letter stating the adjoining lot owners do not approve the proposed parking plan.
