Approximately four months after the project broke ground, Dripping Springs ISD officials said construction is on schedule for Driftwood Springs High School.
“The biggest piece that you can see is definitely the tilt walls, which is really allowing that campus to take shape, and you can tell what it's really going to look like,” DSISD Chief Operations Officer Scott Berry said.
The latest update
Driftwood Springs High School is on track to open in fall 2028. The 506,000-square-foot school will have the capacity to serve 2,500 students and will include baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, practice fields, a band practice lot, an agriculture barn and an auditorium.
According to Berry, the construction team is working on:
- The geothermal underground system
- Pouring the slab
- Tilt walls
- Kitchen infrastructure installation
Tilt walls are concrete slabs poured horizontally, then raised vertically once they’ve set. In the academic area, all of the walls have been poured and raised. The team is now working on the tilt walls in the gym area.
Additionally, the construction crew continues to work on the geothermal system, which involves installing the HVAC underground. The ground stays cooler than the surface, so geothermal systems are more energy- and cost-efficient, according to Berry.
How we got here
The district has been planning a second high school for several years as a response to growing enrollment. According to a demographic presentation by Population and Survey Analysts, DSISD added over 1,500 students in the past five years and over 3,000 students in the past 10 years.
Construction for High School No. 2 was funded by Proposition A of a 2025 voter-approved bond, which allocated $298.78 million toward the construction of the new high school. The design was funded by a 2023 bond.
One last thing
The board of trustees selected navy blue and gold as the official school colors at a June 22 meeting. The school mascot will be discussed and voted on during the fall semester, according to district officials.
