Baranoff Elementary School 1 of 3 Austin ISD campuses to receive roof improvements this summer

South Austin’s Baranoff Elementary School, located at 12009 Buckingham Gate Road, will see an estimated $651,100 of work to improve the campus’s roofs over the summer.

Austin ISD trustees ordered the district to negotiate a contract with Premier Metalwerks for the project, which was approved as a renovation in the district’s 2017 bond program. Premier Metalwerks was one of eight companies to place bids on the project.

While the project was originally budgeted for $1.1 million, the reduction in estimated cost is due to “the refinement of the project scope” to accurately reflect current needs, according to district documents. Work will include improvements to school gutters and downspouts, as well as the installation of a reflective coating that will extend the roof’s lifespan and the building's energy efficiency, according to the district.

Once a contract is approved, contractors will begin working on the project within 10 days, according to the contract.

Baranoff Elementary was one of three AISD campuses to have bids for roof improvements selected by the board during the district’s April 27 meeting’s consent agenda. Trustees did not discuss the actions during the meeting other than for approval.

The district will negotiate an agreement with Port Enterprises for roof work at Webb Middle School in Central Austin with an estimated $970,059 price tag. The district is also negotiating an additional contract with Port Enterprises for more than $1.2 million of estimated improvements at Allison Elementary School in East Austin.

Both project estimates came in over budget by $390,059 and $598,667, respectively, due to “unforeseen damage uncovered” at the campuses since the initial estimates were made in 2017, according to district documents.
