Though temperatures around Austin are slowly warming Feb. 2 following several days of below-freezing weather, Austin ISD announced it will cancel classes Feb. 3.
"Many of our campuses remain unsafe, and thousands of our staff and families are still without power," AISD Media Relations Specialist Nayeli Santoyo said in a press release Feb. 2.
As of the morning of Feb. 2, around 20 campuses had no power, and many roads to schools were impassable because of dangerous downed trees that need to be cleared, Santoyo said.
Other factors the district considered to make the decision include the availability of food for school breakfasts and lunches, power lines blocking some school entrances, and the availability of internet at schools.
