7 tips to know before heading to the Austin airport this holiday season

For those parking at the airport, airport staff encourage individuals to check ABIAParking.com. While lots are not expected to fill up, travelers can reserve a spot in the Blue Garage, Red Garage or Economy lots and see real-time availability before arriving. Shuttles typically run every 15-20 minutes, but delays are possible during peak travel periods.

Traffic on the roads leading into the airport is also expected to be heavy. For drop-offs, either level works—individuals can choose whichever curb looks less congested.

2. Flying Allegiant or Frontier?

Both airlines operate out of the South Terminal, located at 10000 Logistics Lane near US 183 and Burleson Road. It’s not connected to the Barbara Jordan Terminal; therefore, passengers are encouraged to park at the South Terminal for the quickest trip.

3. Speed up check-in

Ticket counters will be busy, especially for airlines with free or discounted checked bags. Passengers traveling light can skip the ticket counter entirely by using mobile boarding passes, self-service kiosks or curbside check-in where available.

4. Prep for security

ABIA has three screening checkpoints that all open at 3 a.m. TSA PreCheck, Clear and active-duty military lanes are located at Checkpoint 2 West; Clear-only travelers should use Checkpoint 1. TSA no longer requires shoe removal, but the usual rules still apply: liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less, and travelers should avoid putting prohibited items in carry-on luggage.

It’s recommended to pack bulky items or souvenirs in carry-ons as they can trigger alarms in checked bags and slow down luggage processing. Anyone traveling with a firearm should review TSA guidance ahead of time.

5. Accessibility and assistance options

ADA-compliant shuttles run between the terminal and Economy lots, and wheelchair assistance is coordinated through specific airline carriers. TSA Cares can also connect passengers with a support specialist during screening if arranged at least 72 hours ahead.

ABIA also offers a Mobility Lounge near the Southwest ticket counters and participates in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program for travelers who may need additional time or support.

6. Construction continues

Work tied to the Journey With AUS multibillion-dollar expansion project is underway. Travelers should expect to encounter construction walls and scaffolding on both the departures and arrivals levels.
